Colder weather is upon us, but that doesn’t mean we have to say bye to our gardens. In fact, this is a perfect time to grow some crops that will come in handy for your next recipe. Let’s see what you can grow in your garden this fall.

Garlic

If you haven’t grown garlic in your garden before, this is your year to try it. Garlic that is planted in the fall will grow stronger and healthier by next summer. If you start planting in the fall you will be in great shape for growing the best garlic you have ever had come summertime. Instead of running to the store to pick up garlic, you’ll have some in your backyard ready for you to use any time.

Shallots

Just like garlic, shallots are best planted in the fall. Come springtime you will have a great crop of shallots. If you expect a cold winter make sure to cover the beds with a nice layer of mulch. That will keep the ground nice and warm for the crop. Shallots are such a versatile aromatic,  you’ll be so glad you decided to plant them when you did.

Mache

Also known as Corn Salad, Mache grows great in cool weather. Mache does great growing unprotected, but it may be a good idea to have a cold frame or hoop house for it. By February you will have delicious Mache to eat.

Kale

Planting your kale in October means a nice harvest in early spring. If you are looking to eat healthily, kale is a great crop to grow. Get ready to make your favorite kale salads and smoothies!

Spinach

It is never a bad thing to plan early, especially when it comes to planting crops. If you want a headstart on planting your favorite vegetable, now is the perfect time. If you plant spinach this fall, come February you will notice the little sprouts taking off and growing fast since there is more daylight.

Lettuce

A cold frame is needed when you grow lettuce in the fall. Early spring the plants will be growing like crazy and you will have an early crop of lettuce. You will be able to eat as many salads, wraps, and lettuce soup as you want.
